i agree. i personally feel that nothing, and NOTHING can beat the Wheel of time series in terms of the magic system. Its not just the saidin/saidar combination. everything from the wolf brothers to the concept of the wheel to how taveren affects said wheel...

Everything has been beautifully crafted.

The Series did get a bit slow at times. People felt that too much time was spent explaining too many details. But, all that was nothing more than the foundation that RJ was placing for the end of the story.
for those of you who stopped reading the series because the story was too slow, or whatever, i recommend that you finish the series- the ending is definitely worth it.

I also agree with the books there that I am familiar with especially the mistborn and the WoT. However I would definitely place Patric Rothfuss' Kingkiller series in there. he includes Naming; the power over things by acquiring it's true name although in his books knowing somethings true name has to come from complete understanding of said things nature, so anyone overhearing it sounds like garble. He also includes a magic system Called sympathy which is thoroughly explained and follows principals of equivalent exchange. to quote someone less tired than I "sympathy. Since this latter form is so well explained it lets the readers understand the characters’ limitations and means that whenever they use their arcane abilities it just seems natural. It also unique and refreshing in that it is presented in a scientific manner. Sympathy actually obeys conservation of energy and lectures at the aforementioned magical university involve students having to memorise efficiency tables for various ‘spells"

which I acquired from http://felixonline.co.uk/books/2100/the-kingkiller-chronicle/
(academic honesty and all that)

Fair warning, This trilogy is truly amazing (and i read a lot) BUT the last book is yet to have a release date set.

Nice work on the list, glad to know i'm not the only one who gets all tingly over this stuff

In my experience if the academic establishment pay attention to genre fiction at all, it is to the classics, to Tolkien and Bradbury and Heinlein and the rest of the high school reading list selections. Modern writers like Chabon have managed to bring a very genre feel to award-winning literary fiction, which is both great and unfortunate. The Road, written by any other author (and as good as it was, it wasn't exactly a revolutionary concept), would have been shelved with science fiction and fantasy. But since Cormac McCarthy wrote it, it's shelved with mainstream fiction and featured on Oprah. Conversely, William Gibson's Pattern Recognition, which is undeniably a modern thriller with a literary tone, is shelved as sci-fi because Gibson's a science fiction writer.

If anything, this trend is the "educated elite" (i.e. collegiate professors and graduate students) realizing that Fantasy and Science Fiction books are very often written at a very high level.

Of the books you mentioned above, the only one that I've read is The Road by Cormac McCarthy, and I don't consider it Science Fiction at all because there are so few elements of SciFi in it.. The closest that a Fantasy book has come to being literary fiction is The Magicians by Lev Grossman. The only reason people say that book leans towards literary is because the focus of the book is more overtly on the characters and the central plot doesn't have the clear goal that most genre fiction has (which was, to me at least, a weakness of the book).

i would say yeah, but that has also caused be to consider games that get lower than an 8 as bad, eventhough a game that gets rated with a 7 cant be considered bad, but there's atleast a handfull of games released alongside the 7 game and i only have that much money. also sometimes the reviewers dont complete the game before reviewing it (differs per review site i guess) and that might not give them a complete picture of the game.

I tend to think that there is something different about this last battle, and I really think it has to do with the ending of the The Gathering Storm. Rand basically saw every life he has ever lived and questioned the futility of continuing the endless cycle. He decided not to destroy the world because he wanted to do things different this time, and at least attempt to truly change things. I don't really see the point of taking Rand to that point if is not really going to be able to change anything. There has to be a reason why we are focused on this particular last battle, and I tend to think its because it is the Last Battle. Now, does that mean the wheel of time stops turning, not necessarily, I just think it will turn a different way, a way without the Dark One.

Thanks! You know, the lasting effect that Super Mario Bros. had on video game movies is astounding: that movie came out in 1993 and it's still brought up as an example of the dangers of making movies from video games.

You're right to mention the vastness of the stories -- it would be impossible for a movie to create the sense of immersion that games do, so they really have to take a different tack when it comes to telling the stories.

Great post, agree that a movie based on a game should only be made if it adds something to the story. It's good to see the gaming world stand up and demand more creative control, the list of woeful movie adaptations based on games is almost endless. Games like Assassins Creed, Heavy Rain, Dead Space, Elder Scrolls etc already have a vast and epic story to them, they are very well made games. Do they need a movie? Especially when the hours a gamer invests into there games is an experience not easily duplicated by a 2 hour movie.

I hope the deal goes through as it will set a new standard for future game adaptations. One things for sure, we've come along way since Bob Hoskins picked up a plunger and played Mario.

Completely agree, of course, you have to remember that Stephen Spielberg hasn't made a really good movie since Minority Report, its not like he is in his prime either. In his prime, there is no way he lets his friends dictate to him what should and should not be in a movie. He should have said no aliens or no movie and be done with it, I think everyone would have been better off.

I could have told you that. Spielberg should have reigned him in more. I didn't even mind the surviving-a-thermonuclear-explosion-in-a-refrigerator thing, Indy's been surviving crazy shit for years. But those frigging prairie dogs? Pure Lucas nonsense. They remind me of the ridiculous droid antics in Attack of the Clones.

The first three Indy films, as far out as they were, worked because they took themselves slightly more seriously. No matter how many quips Indy tossed off, at the end of the day he was up against some really evil villains. Soviet Cate Blanchett and weird looking aliens just don't cut it.

Yes, the book is based on the iPod video game. He explains it in his announcement. Its an interesting career move for him, though a relatively minor one. Thats one thing I admire about Sanderson, his willingness to take chance and go in different directions.

I am glad they have Wake Up from the Matrix, perfect song for the end of that movie. I know its cheesy, but I always loved "Then He Kissed Me" at the end of Adventures in Babysitting. I may be dating myself on that reference. I'll also add that the use of Yellow Bedletter at the end of 50/50 was quite well done, I may just get the soundtrack to that movie.

I approve of Sanderson's willingness to advance the timeline of his Mistborn world -- it's something he's been quoted as not liking about other fantasy series. There are many writers out there who write stories separated by centuries, during which period of time no appreciable technological or cultural progress has been made in the secondary world. Seems a bit unrealistic, no? Just think of how different our world is now than it was three hundred years ago.

Tad Williams used to talk about returning to his Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn world at a point hundreds of years in its future, during its equivalent of the Industrial Revolution. This always fascinated me and I'm still disappointed to this day that it hasn't happened. On the other hand, that trilogy is one of my favorite fantasy series of all time, so I wouldn't want him going back to it unless he had a story he absolutely needed to tell.
